Frequently asked questions
Can I consult a Belgian lawyer in English?
Yes. Maître Yamen Midani handles consultations and files in English, as well as in French and Arabic. Court documents are filed in French, but everything is explained to you in English.
How much does a lawyer cost in Brussels?
With Maître Midani, the first consultation costs €100 excl. VAT (€121 incl. VAT). Further work is billed at an hourly rate of €100 to €200 excl. VAT, or as a fixed fee, under a written fee agreement signed beforehand.
Can the consultation take place online?
Yes. Video consultations cost the same as office consultations and are convenient if you live outside Brussels or abroad.
Does a court case in Belgium have to be in French or Dutch?
In Brussels, proceedings are conducted in French or Dutch. Your lawyer drafts the court documents in one of these languages and explains everything to you in English.
A client of my company will not pay an invoice. What can I do?
Between businesses, late payment interest and a €40 flat-rate compensation apply automatically. After a formal notice, an undisputed debt can be recovered through a bailiff without going to court; a disputed debt requires court proceedings.
My landlord will not return my rental deposit. What can I do?
The deposit is released at the end of the lease either with the written agreement of both parties or by court decision. If the landlord refuses without valid reason, the justice of the peace can order its release.
